R4,000.00

Gloriosa superba
Flame Lily
Vertical Size: 300 mm
Horizontal Size: 450 mm
Watercolour

All parts are extremely poisonous, and ingestion can be fatal but it is used as a traditional medicine in many cultures . It is the national flower of Zimbabwe, and a Gloriosa diamond flower brooch was presented to the young Queen Elizabeth when visiting there in 1947. The flowers open sequentially so that different stages of development are seen on one branch at the same time.

Description

Gwenda started botanical painting late in life after being enthused by a visit to a BAASA exhibition in Johannesburg in 2012. Classes with Ann Harris followed from 2013 and since then workshops with Gill Condy, Margaret Best, Vicky Thomas, Linda de Wet, and Willie Schlechter have continued to inspire and contribute to a never-ending learning curve. She has exhibited at the Plant exhibition at Kirstenbosch, the Johannesburg Flower Show, the World Wide exhibition at Everard Read and BAASA exhibitions in Johannesburg. Gwenda is an active member of the Gauteng BAASA committee.
