Isabelita van Zyl – Solanum aculeatissimum

R4,500.00

Solanum aculeatissimum
Dutch eggplant, love-apple
Vertical Size: 300 mm
Horizontal Size: 240 mm
Watercolour

Isabelita painted this little beauty while out in the Buffelskloof nature reserve about 100kms from Dullstroom. She drew it in situ and used cuttings to complete the painting. The stems are incredibly spiny and the only way to handle them is with a pair of pliers.Solanum species are varied and found all over the world. It is not known to which country this species S. aculeatissimum is native. Some speculate Asia and others Africa as it is closely related to other native species in sub-saharan Africa. Francis Mason (Scottish-born) was the first botanist to find the plant at the Cape of Good Hope in the 1770’s.
The fruits are toxic, and cattle have died from eating it (force-feeding). Other fruits related to this plant are tomatoes and deadly nightshade.

Isabelita uses professional grade artists watercolour paint and 100% cotton archival watercolour paper. This artwork has been mounted with a cotton museum mount board, ready to frame. It will last a lifetime. The copyright of this artwork remains with Isabelita van Zyl isabelita.vanzyl@gmail.com.
